This cause is profoundly personal to me. I know firsthand the heartbreak of watching a loved one suffer through addiction — but I also know the incredible hope that recovery brings. I’m grateful to have three family members in long-term recovery, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. They are my inspiration and my “why” for raising money for the Boston Bulldogs.

This cause is deeply personal to me. I’m running the Boston Marathon to celebrate my sister’s strength and the incredible progress she’s made on her path to sobriety. Watching her find strength, healing, and courage through recovery has been very inspiring. Her determination reminds me every day that recovery is possible — and that no one should have to face it alone.

After years of struggling, I’ve finally been able to break free from those chains, moving forward one step at a time. I’m running not only for myself, but for my family, my wife, and in honor of those we’ve lost to addiction. Running and this incredible group has given me hope, purpose, and a second chance.

So I’m going to try to run the Boston Marathon back to back years, this time to help raise more awareness of “The Boston Bulldogs” documentary my son Jack and I made about the club that’s helping so many families with addiction recovery.

“I’m going to run the Boston marathon someday”. For a long time it seemed impossible due to my addiction taking hold of my life. Over 6 years ago I met the Bulldogs team captain Meg, who accepted me with open arms and helped me until I could help myself. The Bulldogs community gave me a sense of acceptance, and hope for a life different than the one I was living.

Just over 4 years ago I tore down my whole life due to my addiction and alcoholism. Over the last 4 years through recovery I have been able to build an amazing life for myself and my family. And that was only possible because I found recovery.

I honestly never thought I would run the Boston Marathon but I also never thought I would lose my Dad when I was only 23. Losing him changed my outlook on life and how I approach everyday. I hold more compassion, empathy and faith in my heart since he passed as that has been the greatest way for me to navigate grief and continue without him. Writing this I could get emotional thinking about my family along the marathon route cheering me on and I can strangely picture my Dad being there – sign in hand, screaming my name, probably tearing up a little bit, and although I won’t have him there in that way I know I will feel him with me along the route. I am running for my Dad, my Aunt, my family and all the other families who have been affected by addiction.

I believe deeply in this mission because I’ve experienced it firsthand. After leaving rehab, I reached out to the Bulldogs — a group I had learned about while in treatment. Coach Mike spent over two hours on the phone with me, a complete stranger, just listening, encouraging, and offering support. He even mailed me a pair of running shoes. That simple act of kindness marked the start of my recovery and running journey.

My younger brother passed away shortly after turning 18 from a drug overdose, after struggling with his mental health and substance abuse from a young age. Losing him changed my life forever, and I’ve carried a desire ever since to honor his memory in a way that gives back— to help others who are fighting similar battles and to support the families and communities walking beside them.

It is an honor to run the 130th Boston Marathon with this team that I have seen and personally experienced bring recovery, physical health, confidence, community and belonging to so many. This is truly an amazing opportunity to give back and make a difference in our ever-growing community and for  those who find strength in our message. With your support, the Boston Bulldogs can touch many more lives affected by addiction, show others that they are not alone, and keep alive the memory of those we have lost.

The Bulldogs played a huge role in saving the life of one of my closest lifelong friends, and he is now thriving in his personal and professional life, giving back to the community on a daily basis, and most importantly, comfortable with himself.
